Objective: This study examined the fluoroapatite present in the enamel using magic angle spinningnuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS-NMR).
Methods: Twelve tooth (6 human and 6 bovine teeth) specimens were assigned to each of the following treatment groups; (1) 60 seconds Taste APF gel for 1 week (n=3) and (2) Cavity Shield varnish for 1 week (n=3). All the specimens were dried at 37¡É for 12 hours, powdered and analyzed. The powder specimens were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and 19F MAS-NMR.
Results: The broad range XRD patterns were in accordance with a typical hydroxyapatite pattern, and there were no changes in the apatite crystal structure. In the topical fluoride application group, the FT-IR spectra also revealed the typical vibration modes of apatite, and the spectrum was similar to the control. The 19F MAS-NMR peak at 100-120 ppm was observed in the 60 seconds Taste APF gel groups. The increasing peak area, height of the maximum peak and the full width half maximum suggest the incorporation of fluorine in the apatite crystal.
Conclusions: Topical fluoride application can alter the microstructure of the enamel through the incorporation of fluoride ions into hydroxyapatite crystals, and 19F MAS-NMR is a good technique for analyzing the fluoroapatite in enamel.
